February is turning into a busy month full of events and holiday celebrations here at Newport!
This week, we held our first annual Valentine’s Day party, which turned out to be a massive success. Our orange and pink rooms were packed with parents and children trading valentines and sweets, and the kids had a fantastic time exploring the many V-Day activities and games the teachers had set up for them. We hope the kids won’t eat all the candy and treats they received in one sitting, but if they do, at least they developed good brushing habits last week during our Dental Health Unit. 😀
February is Black History Month, and with the help of the Black History Month display in our front entranceway, we’ve been learning all about such trailblazers as Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, and Ruby Bridges. Last month, our older kids showed us that they can “dream like Dr. King,” and this month, we hope to instill in them a sense of appreciation and respect for these brave, dynamic people. Having the courage to stand up for what you believe in is a vital part of growing up, and we hope our kids learn to do just that.
Earlier in the month, we learned about Groundhog Day, and the Twos class had the opportunity to play groundhogs themselves by looking at their shadows on the wall. We’re not sure what it means if seven two-year-olds see their shadows on February 2nd, but we’re hopeful that it means something good. 😉
Although Newport will be closed on Presidents’ Day, that hasn’t stopped our kids from learning about U.S. presidents and exploring their own presidential aspirations. The Pre-K kids were given the opportunity to imagine what great deeds they would do as president, and these were their answers:
If I were president…
“There would be no guns in the whole wide world and I would give everyone ice cream.” -Sean, 5 years old
“I would put bad guys in jail.” -Ryan, 4 years old
“I would keep bad guys away from people.” -Eddie, 4 years old
“I wouldn’t want anyone to be sad. I want everyone to be happy and cute.” -Rowan, 3 years old
Keep an eye on these kids – with campaign platforms as strong as these, we’re willing to bet that any one of them could end up in the White House someday!
